How academic can someone really be after spending years governing? How does power turn the whole development of an argument into a discourse that aims at (and fails at) being mobilizing, and all the supposed creation of knowledge that gets passed down to those training themselves through a string of popularization books? Does taking part in a political party, or at least in the backroom councils and cliques of political decision-making — even "sectoral" ones — entitle you to hold a university post and get away with saying a lot while contributing almost nothing?
Beyond the disrespect that wasting people's time represents, sitting through a "class" or "talk" given by a former official makes me ask myself all of that.
I attended a doctoral school and found myself at a panel where a former official shared the stage with a high-level researcher working on the relationship between human agency and neuropsychology. The difference was abysmal: on one side, evidence; on the other, a string of commonplaces. And while I'm not someone inclined to understand knowledge creation as an exercise chasing mere "evidence," it's only fair to recognize a job well done when you see one. The good professor came from a North American university, of course. But that shouldn't be an excuse to dismiss decent work. If anything, it's necessary to speak from the Global South with high-quality research. This last part, I know, is a guerrilla war over funding to secure and over the general lack of financing. Ne0liberalism tells us that scarcity is what generates creativity. And, indeed, we do see very creative exercises of knowledge creation within our research "3cosystem."
However, on the other hand, there's this former official's talk, and one can only wonder whether its lack of depth is due to that or simply to not having the time. Because let's be honest: whoever's caught up in these dealings hardly has time to spare. Still, we should focus on this character's self-regard.
After all, who is capable of showing up with a diatribe instead of a talk in front of a group of academics and doctoral researchers? It seems to me only someone who holds in contempt the work and time of those of us sitting there.
This should be taken into account, because I think it's a corollary of what Mark Fisher says in "Exiting the Vampire Castle" (EN, ES). When Fisher talks about how the bourgeois left applies the same strategies of atomization and of burying debate under a coalescence built on class consciousness, he also spells out the guilt-tripping tactics of moralizing leaders. In my case, it was impossible not to notice, in this academic's tone and discourse, a pedagogical way of addressing our work as researchers. Why apply such a condescending discourse? It felt as if she thought that was the bellows we needed to push past our energies, already impoverished by the lack of resources, the precarization of academia, and the pressure of the publish or perish dictum. And even though the talk wasn't meant to address any of that, in truth the p3rformance was aimed exactly there. That explains its lack of depth and its explanatory way of using the authors it cited.
I say it resembles what Fisher describes because what I lived through represents the adoption of neoliberal discourse within academia. It shows up in the shape of d3caffeinated thought, meant to point at things rather than question them, urging us to read, to do, or to "be critical" (in the form of the well-worn idea that "science is about asking questions"), rather than addressing the foundations of the relationship between individual, machine, and social institution. And it's neoliberal because it lays things out without ever doubting them, quickly, with jokes sprinkled through the discourse and appeals to pop culture. In my judgment, in cases like these, solemnity and rigor are a good way out within an academic context, given the time that demands, and above all because it opens up the possibility of building community out of the crisis of thought that an expository, presentational style of communication provokes.

¿Qué tan académico puede ser alguien que se dedicó a gobernar? ¿Cómo el poder transforma todo el desarrollo de argumentos en un discurso que pretende (y falla en) ser movilizador y toda la supuesta creación de conocimiento que se transfiere a quienes se forman en una articulación de libros de divulgación? ¿Acaso participar en un partido político o al menos en los conciliábulos y camarillas de las decisiones políticas, aunque sean "sectoriales" te habilita a ostentar una plaza universitaria e impunemente decir mucho para aportar casi nada?
Más allá de la falta de respeto que significa el gasto de tiempo, asistir a una "clase" o "ponencia" de una exautoridad me hace preguntarme todo eso.
Asistí a una escuela doctoral y me encontré una mesa donde una exautoridad compartía con una investigadora de alto nivel en la relación entre agencia humana y neuropsicología. La diferencia fue abismal: en un lado, la evidencia; en el otro, la retahíla de lugares comunes. Y si bien no son alguien dado a entender la creación de conocimiento como un ejercicio que busque la mera "evidencia", sí es menester reconocer cuando se está frente a un trabajo bien hecho. La profesora buena venía de una universidad norteamericana, claro. Mas esto no debe ser excusa para ver un trabajo decente. Antes bien, es necesario hablar desde el Sur global con investigación de alta calidad. Esto último, lo sé, es una guerra de guerrillas por los fondos por conseguir y por la falta de financiamiento en general. El ne0liberalismo nos dice que la escasez es la generadora de la creatividad. Y, en efecto, vemos ejercicios muy creativos de creación de conocimiento en nuestro "3cosistema" de investigación.
Sin embargo, por otro lado, se encuentra la ponencia de esta exautoridad y uno solo puede pensar si acaso su falta de profundidad se debe a esto o a que no tiene tiempo. Porque hay que decirlo: quien está en estos menesteres difícilmente tiene tiempo. Sin embargo, hay que centrarse en la autoestima de este personaje.
Después de todo, ¿quién es capaz de presentarse con una diatriba antes que una ponencia ante un grupo de académicos e investigadores doctorales? Me parece que solo alguien que desprecia el trabajo y el tiempo de quienes estamos allí.

Cuando Fisher habla de cómo la izquierda burguesa se encarga de aplicar las mismas estrategias de atomización y de ocultamiento del debate por una coalescencia basada en la conciencia de clase, al mismo tiempo especifica las tácticas culpabilizadoras de los dirigentes moralizadores. En mi caso, era inevitable observar en el tono y el discurso de la académica una forma pedagógica de apelar a nuestro quehacer como investigadores. ¿Por qué se aplica un discurso tan condescendiente? Parecía como si ella estuviera pensando en que ese era el fuelle que necesitábamos para ir más allá de nuestras energías pauperizadas por la falta de recursos, la precarización de la academia y las presiones por el dictum publish or perish. Y si bien no era una ponencia para hablar de eso, en realidad la p3rformance apuntaba a eso. Eso explica su falta de profundidad y su forma explicativa de usar los autores que citaba.
Digo que se parece a lo que dice Fisher porque esto que viví representa la adopción del discurso neoliberal en la academia. Aparece en forma de un pensamiento d3scafeinado, destinado a apuntar cosas, no a cuestionarlas, exhortando a leer, a hacer o a ser crítico (en la forma de la tan manida idea de "la ciencia es hacerse preguntas"), no a los fundamentos de la relación entre individuo, máquina e institución social. Y es neoliberal porque expone sin poner en duda, rápidamente, con chistes entre medio del discurso y apelaciones a la cultura pop. A mi juicio, en estos casos, la solemnidad y la rigurosidad son una buena vía de egreso dentro de un contexto académico por el tiempo que eso aplica y, sobre todo, porque abre la posibilidad de hacer comunidad a partir de la crisis del pensamiento que provoca una comunicación expositiva.
Fue lamentable. Quiero creer que la exautoridad no se dio cuenta de todo esto.
