HOW DOES AN ACADEMIC DRESS?¿CÓMO SE VISTE UN ACADÉMICO?

The thesis proposal defense is coming up, an instance of review by the faculty committee to see whether what I'm doing has any chance of reaching a harbor full of exuberant, generous women, or whether it'll shipwreck, with scraps of words occasionally washing up on the shores of good will.

My personal image has always been flat, though I admit I'm not a particularly careful person. I avoid exaggerated shapes and keep a stable color palette. I have a friend who experiments without breaking the mold in academic contexts, and I admire him for it, but I feel that's not for me. My paranoia outweighs my vanity. The truth is that, however much I like talking about the body, it's very hard for me to h4ve a b0dy. I'd rather be pure voice sounding through the room's speakers, with nobody looking at me.

I assume this is something that tends to happen to quite a few people. Historically, it's happened to quite a few people. And that's the reason stable dress codes exist in the first place. Formal wear is an almost universal code, suited to contexts like the one I'm describing here, but academia has always been inscrutable when it comes to these c0des of the b0dy. Wherever the "pr0ducti0n of kn0wledge" is the aim, the body gets relegated to second place, exiled to art and gender studies. And even within those fields, applying for competitive funding or writing articles for peer-reviewed journals requires the absence of the body for them to exist at all. There's no position statement that makes a body present. There's no production of knowledge that conceives of the writer as dressed.

And yet, here I am, in a m4ll, having to buy clothes to look the part for the occasion, and one might wonder what it even means to be dressed appropriately for the review of a thesis proposal at a university in this country.
